Counsel #9 — Words Can Wound

Bullying through digital technology has sadly become common on social media platforms. Many young people, often without their parent's knowledge, spread rumors or post hurtful comments aimed at causing emotional pain or public embarrassment. Cyberbullying can take many forms, from comment threads urging someone to harm themselves to videos mocking someone’s appearance, culture, or race. CLi 19.2

When targeted by this kind of public shaming, the person on the receiving end can struggle with identity, anxiety, depression, and low self-worth. They also may experience academic and social difficulties, believing the hurtful words of their peers over the comforting truth of God’s love. Regardless of age, gender, or background, words hold incredible power, capable of wounding even the strongest of hearts. Remember, how you use social media leaves a lasting impact. Inflicting mental and emotional pain on others is never worth it and stands against the principles of kindness and respect for all of God’s children.[16] CLi 19.3

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29 NIV CLi 19.4

“Let us resolve never to engage in evilspeaking and backbiting. Let us refuse to serve Satan by implanting seeds of doubt…” Ellen White in Our High Calling, p. 291 CLi 19.5
