Counsel #17 — Discerning Decisions

In today’s world, many make choices without thinking about the consequences of that choice, preferring instant pleasure and gratification over wisdom. Making good decisions requires a thoughtful process utilizing discernment and intentionality. It begins with gathering relevant information about as many available details as possible and understanding the situation. It is essential to ask the Holy Spirit for discernment in making decisions that will align with God’s purpose for your life. CWe 106.2

By seeking God’s guidance, you will be able to effectively evaluate the consequences of each option, considering short and long-term impacts on yourself and others. Poor decisions made impulsively or without careful thought can lead to negative outcomes such as damaged relationships, financial struggles, missed opportunities, or guilt, making mental and physical recovery more challenging. If you’ve made a decision that has reaped detrimental consequences, seek counsel from trusted individuals with wisdom who can provide clarity and encouragement. Always weigh your options carefully, allowing time for reflection. It all comes down to the life you want to live. Wise decisions will always lead to personal growth and the strengthening of relationships, including your relationship with God, whereas poor choices often result in regret and unnecessary hardship.[128] CWe 106.3

“Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21 NIV CWe 106.4

“The Lord says to the people of the earth, ‘Choose you this day whom ye will serve.’ All are now deciding their eternal destiny.” Ellen White in Maranatha, p. 108 CWe 106.5
