Counsel #9 — Trusting God’s Name
Picture: Counsel #9 — Trusting God’s Name CWe 11.1
In Hebrew thought, a name wasn’t just a label; it represented the essence of a person. To know someone’s name meant to understand their character, their reputation, and their actions. Similarly, knowing God’s name isn’t simply knowing the words "Jehovah," "Elohim," or "Jesus." It’s about understanding what those names reveal about His nature, Who He is, and experiencing His attributes in our lives. CWe 11.2
Knowing God’s name means experiencing His character.[9] It’s not just intellectual knowledge, but a deep understanding of His mercy, love, faithfulness, and power through personal encounters. When we experience these attributes, trust naturally follows. Think of times you’ve felt His forgiveness, comfort, or provision — these experiences build confidence in His care. He promises to never abandon those who seek Him. This trust is nurtured through studying Scripture, prayer, reflection, and fellowship, transforming our understanding from head knowledge to a lived reality that empowers us to face any challenge with assurance.[10] CWe 11.3
“Those who know Your name [who have experienced Your precious mercy] will put their confident trust in You, For You, O Lord, have not abandoned those who seek You.” Psalms 9:10 AMP CWe 11.4
“Of the church of Christ it is written ‘This is the name wherewith she shall be called, The Lord our righteousness.’ Jeremiah 33:16. This name is put upon every follower of Christ.” Ellen White in The Faith I Live By, p. 41 CWe 11.5
Reflect: How does the promise that God will never abandon those who seek Him impact your fears and anxieties? CWe 11.6
