Counsel #10 — Breaking Bad Habits
Picture: Counsel #10 — Breaking Bad Habits CWe 57.1
The Bible acknowledges our struggle with sin, often manifesting as bad habits that hold us back from living our best lives. These habits, fueled by our fallen nature, can distance us from God's purpose. But the Christian perspective offers hope and practical steps to break free: CWe 57.2
- Acknowledge the problem by self-assessment. Psalms 139:23, 24
- Seek God’s strength for lasting change. Philippians 4:13
- Replace bad habits with good ones. Colossians 3:9
- Develop a support group. Proverbs 27:17
There may be setbacks, but God's grace is sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:9). By relying on His strength, seeking guidance, and replacing bad habits with good ones, you can experience the freedom and joy of living a life that reflects God's purpose for you.[69] CWe 57.3
“Strengthen yourselves so that you will live here on earth doing what God wants, not the evil things people want.” 1 Peter 4:2, 3, 7 NKJV CWe 57.4
“Bad habits are more easily formed than good habits, and the bad habits are given up with more difficulty…. In the natural world, give up a field to itself and you will see it covered with briers and thorns; but if it yields precious grain or beautiful flowers, care and unremitting labor must be applied.” Ellen White in Maranatha, p. 229 CWe 57.5
Reflect: What specific actions will you take to break free from your bad habits? How will you incorporate God’s help in putting this plan in action? CWe 57.6
