Counsel #12 — Singing

Singing hymns and praise songs is a powerful way to connect with God's heart. It’s more than just music—it’s worship that stirs our spirit and brings us closer to Him. Psalms 149:5 encourages believers to "sing for joy on their beds," reminding us that praise isn’t just for church services; it’s something that can be a constant part of our lives. This verse suggests that even in our quiet moments, our hearts can overflow with melodies of gratitude and adoration for God. CSL 29.9
Singing also helps Jesus’ teachings take root in our hearts. Through songs, we teach, encourage, and build each other up in faith. When we sing together, we’re not just making music—we’re strengthening the church, creating unity, lifting one voice to honor our Savior.6 CSL 29.10
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16 NKJV CSL 29.11
“No words can properly set forth the deep blessedness of genuine worship. When human beings sing with the Spirit and the understanding, heavenly musicians take up the strain, and join in the song of thanksgiving.” Ellen White in Testimonies for the Church, vol. 9, p. 143 CSL 29.12
Reflect: What does it mean for singing to be an act of worship, and how should that understanding influence the way you sing? CSL 29.13
