Counsel #11 — Comparison Trap

Scroll. Like. Double-tap. Swipe. Repeat. From the moment we wake up, we’re fed curated images of what “beautiful,” “successful,” or “worthy” should look like. Although most young people would call social media the best form of entertainment, let’s be honest - it messes with our heads. Even when we know it’s just a highlight reel, or we’re sure an image has been filtered, comparison creeps in. CI 169.2

According to the Bible, comparison robs joy, peace, and purpose, which is why Scripture warns against this mindset. Measuring ourselves by others will only distort the truth. God wants you to understand that you were made with intentionality, and that He isn’t grading you against someone else’s life. He’s guiding you through your own. So, refocus your mind and stop concentrating on what someone else is doing or the success you perceive someone else to have. Never forget that the devil is always looking for ways to distort the truth. He is constantly attempting to stir the “jealousy pot” in your heart to believe seemingly “better things” happen only to other people. But earthly success does not equal spiritual success, and people who seem to have everything could actually have nothing, according to God’s kingdom standards. Take a break from scrolling and focus on what God says about you.[185] CI 169.3
