Counsels on Self-Identity
Counsel #14 — False Manhood

Have you ever wondered why some men explode in anger when someone questions their toughness, or why they feel the need to dominate a room to prove they belong? That might be a sign of fragile masculinity: the fear that you’re falling short of what society says a “real man” should be. CI 143.2
When men feel their masculinity is threatened, they often respond by overcompensating - being louder, more aggressive, and more dismissive of anything “soft.” The truth is, godly masculinity doesn’t need proving. Jesus, the most complete Man who ever lived, was gentle with children, wept with friends, and washed feet like a servant. He didn’t need to assert His power to show strength. His strength was in His surrender. Also, David wasn’t less of a man when he danced before the Lord,[155] and Joseph wasn’t weak when he fled from Potiphar’s wife.[156] True manhood is a posture of humility and faithfulness to God, without the need to “earn” your masculinity by attaining to meet the world’s standards. When your identity is defined in Christ, you live free, secure, steady, and Spirit-led.[157] CI 143.3
“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love.” 1 Corinthians 16:13, 14 NIV CI 143.4
“When you feel an angry spirit arising, take firm hold of Jesus Christ by faith.” Ellen White in Our High Calling, p. 235 CI 143.5
Reflect: Is your definition of manhood shaped by Christ, or by the world’s expectations? CI 143.6
