Counsel #6 — Communication With Colleagues

Open communication is about creating a safe workplace where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas without fear of judgment. Leaders play a crucial role in fostering this environment by actively listening, valuing different perspectives, and encouraging open dialogue. Honest communication is key to building trust and maintaining strong relationships. It means speaking the truth, being transparent, and avoiding deception, which builds a stronger sense of collegiality. Effective communication is about making sure your message is heard and understood. It's not just about speaking, but also about actively listening, asking questions, and providing helpful feedback. From a Christian perspective, effective communication also involves speaking with kindness and compassion, even when things are tough.[140] CR 147.2

The Bible provides many examples of effective communication, from Jesus' teachings to the letters written by the apostles. These examples show us the importance of clear, honest, and respectful communication in building relationships, resolving conflicts, and spreading the gospel. CR 147.3

“My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the meditation of my heart will give you understanding.” Psalms 49:3 NIV CR 147.4

“Every uttered word exerts an influence, every action involves a train of responsibility. No one can live to himself in this world, even if he would. Each one forms a part of the great web of humanity, and through our individual threads of influence, we are linked to the universe.” Ellen White in The Review and Herald, February 16, 1897, par. 2 CR 147.5
