Speaking of a young lady who was very careful of her words, a young man said, “You know she won’t talk nonsense. If you can get a girl to do that you can lead her on to almost any length. But you cannot get a start with her.” BEST September 16, 1901, page 600.1

Young ladies, be careful of your words. Be pleasant, but when anyone attempts to lead you into small talk, don’t go. A young man may like you to talk nonsense with him, or even to give him “cheek,” but he doesn’t respect you for it. “Let your speech be always with grace.” BEST September 16, 1901, page 600.2
